You will see confident figures for how quickly skills expire — a specific number of years, quoted as though it were measured. Treat those carefully; the underlying idea is sound and the precision is invented.
The useful version is a sorting question: is this skill tied to a particular implementation, or to something underneath it?

Three layers
Skills sit at different depths, and the depth predicts the shelf life better than the field does.
Surface: a specific tool or version. How this platform's interface works, this framework's conventions, this vendor's product. Expires when the tool changes, which is measured in years and sometimes months.
Middle: a technique or approach. How to structure a data model, run a discovery process, design an experiment, negotiate a contract. Survives tool changes. Expires when the underlying approach is superseded, which is measured in decades.
Deep: judgment in a domain. Knowing which problems matter, what usually goes wrong, what a good answer looks like, when the standard approach does not apply. Rarely expires. Cannot be acquired quickly, and cannot be acquired without doing the surface work first.
Surface skills are the entry ticket. Middle skills are what transfers. Deep judgment is what makes you expensive.
The trap in each direction
Only surface. You are employable now and re-employable only for as long as the specific tool is in demand. This is the position of someone whose entire experience is one vendor's ecosystem.
Skipping surface. You cannot acquire middle-layer skill without having done the work. People who try to learn frameworks without ever building anything end up able to discuss the work and unable to do it — which is visible immediately in an interview.
Only deep, in one domain. Judgment that is entirely specific to one industry transfers badly, and industries do change.
How to sort a specific skill
Before spending a year on something, ask four questions.
1. If the current market leader disappeared tomorrow, would this still be useful?
If not, it is surface. Learn it because you need it now, not as an investment.
2. Does it teach me something about the shape of the problem?
The best surface skills are ones where learning the tool teaches you the underlying model. Some tools do this and some hide it deliberately. The ones that hide it are the ones to be wary of depending on.
3. Who else has it, and how easily?
A skill that takes two weekends to acquire will not differentiate you for long, however valuable it currently is. A skill that takes three years is a moat and a bet.
4. Does it compound with what I already have?
The highest return is usually not a new field but a second capability adjacent to your existing one. Being decent at two things that meet is worth more than being decent at two unrelated things, and often more than being excellent at one.
What has held up
Without claiming permanence, some categories have survived multiple technology cycles and continue to:
Writing clearly. Increasingly rather than decreasingly valuable as more work is asynchronous and distributed.
Structuring an ambiguous problem. Turning "something is wrong" into a defined question. This is most of what seniority means. See seniority: what actually changes.
Reading data honestly. Including knowing what a study can and cannot support — a skill in short supply and increasingly necessary as claims proliferate.
Working with people who disagree with you. Durable and consistently underrated in career planning.
Domain judgment in a field that will still exist.
Learning quickly. The meta-skill, and the one that makes the rest of this question less urgent.
What to do about a fast-moving field
Learn the current tool properly. Not superficially — you cannot build middle-layer understanding from a tutorial.
While learning it, look for the model underneath. What problem is this solving, what were the alternatives, why is it shaped this way. That is what transfers when the tool does not.
Do not chase every new thing. The cost of following each new entrant is high and the returns are low; most do not survive. Waiting eighteen months costs little and filters heavily.
Do adopt when something changes the shape of the work rather than the interface to it. The distinction is usually visible within a year.
On AI specifically
The current version of this question, and the honest answer is that nobody knows how the skill map settles.
What the evidence supports so far: gains concentrate in structured, checkable work, and are largest for people weakest at the task. That implies the premium on judgment goes up, not down — because the parts that are easy to assist are the parts that were already easy to check. See AI tools at work.
It also implies something uncomfortable about entry-level work, which is where judgment has traditionally been built. If the tasks juniors used to learn on are the tasks most easily assisted, the path to expertise changes. Nobody has good evidence on this yet, and anyone claiming otherwise is speculating.
Practical position: learn to use the tools well, because that is now surface-layer table stakes. Do not assume it is a differentiator — it will not be for long. And put the time saved into the middle and deep layers, which is the only way any of this compounds.

Tickets are necessary and expire. Techniques transfer. Judgment is what you are actually building, and it is only ever built by doing the work — which is why there is no shortcut, and why the people who look for one stay at the surface.
